Do your gums bleed when you brush?
Are your gums red, tender, or swollen?
Do you have foul breath, and you can’t figure out why?
You may be one of the 80% of American adults who suffer from gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, and commonly called gingivitis.
Before you can understand laser treatment for gum disease, you should first grasp what causes the condition. Healthy gum tissue, in combination with underling bone, are responsible for supporting teeth. When gums or bone lose integrity, teeth can loosen or fall out. Gum disease occurs when the bacteria emitted by plaque begin to destroy the bond between teeth and gums. The bacteria hole up in pockets at the gum line, and there they multiply and continue wreaking havoc on oral health. The primary cause of tooth loss for American adults is gum disease.
We can’t stop plaque. It’s a naturally occurring substance that forms in the mouth. However, daily brushing and flossing can remove plaque before it hardens into tartar. Six-month hygiene visits allow us to remove the hardened plaque, as well. Once infection sets in and a patient has early-stage gum disease, our hygienist may suggest a deep cleaning. In the past, this procedure was fairly invasive. However, today we use a soft-tissue laser for prompt, precise, and minimally invasive gum disease treatment.
Our laser features a long, thread-like tip that we place into the periodontal pockets where bacteria breed. The laser’s powerful light vaporizes bacteria on contact. Patients report little or no pain and bleeding, and as a result, prompt recovery. Laser gum treatment also promotes fast reattachment of gum tissue to teeth and, in some cases, bone regeneration.
Once your gums are healthy again, you may have relapses. Your hygienist will work with you to develop a maintenance schedule for cleaning visits, as well as a practical homecare routine to ward off harmful bacteria. Our goal is to help you keep your gums, teeth, and smile healthy for life.
